I spent the past six weeks in England and France. There I saw a few things that Bogota and other Colombian cities might apply to reduce the amount of traffic jams. First, I noticed that the underground in London and Paris is extremely more expensive than the Metro in Medellin. By charging these high prices, more can be spent on making the service better. This is useful because it gets members of the middle class (who own a car) off the streets. The flaw with very cheap but mediocre public transport systems is that they are not aiming at car owners. Another idea is to charge a significant fee to cars that whish to enter highly congested areas. This has been done in London’s central district with positive results. Something that the Parisians have done better than the English is that they have unified all of their forms of public transport, making virtually any destination easily reachable with a master pass.
